What is your identity? What is the objective truth about yourself that no person or circumstance can change?
Over the past 5 years of personal development, I’ve discovered the biggest lie I believe about myself: “You don’t belong.” I hear it when I walk into a meeting, I hear it when I browse Instagram, I sense it in church, in the grocery store, in a writing workshop where I feel I’m out of my league. You don’t belong, you don’t belong…
I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to work on myself and dig into these lies… I can hear it, recognize the lie, and release it. You see, the lies or ‘tapes’ we play to ourselves are in direct conflict to the truth about us.

I know the truth about me, Margi, as a person. I know that I’m enough, no matter how “less-than” I’m feeling in the moment. I know that I’m loved, even when – especially when – I feel unlovable. I know that I’m Created, yet there are times I feel like such a accident, a disappointment.
Having this knowledge is great, but it’s useless unless we learn how to effectively use it to combat self-defeating behavior. We need to find the truth, press it into our hearts, repeat it as a mantra, pray it… and when the lies come, we have the ammunition ready.
So what is that truth about yourself that you’re not quite ready to believe? Take the lies you hear, and create a statement in which the opposite is true. “I don’t belong” turns into “I’m valuable, and I’m worthy of love and belonging.” Write this on a paper and tape it to your bathroom mirror so you see it every single morning.
