This year, as usual, I have no New Year's resoluti

This year, as usual, I have no New Year's resolution. But I have an intention to Pursue. There will still be days that--as an Enneagram 9 and HSP--I will want to numb my overwhelming feelings. There will be days (weeks) that I don't want to take responsibility for my experience. But my intention through it all will be to Pursue.

In the past, my inner narrative has sounded a bit like this:
"Oh well, I can't help that, it's just how life is."
"I'm not in control of that. I'll just have to live with the circumstances."
"Well, I guess that's just out of reach for me."

But the word "pursue" speaks to me of action. It tells me a different story, one where I don't necessarily just take what life throws me, lie down, and go to sleep.

I will pursue Jesus and authentic relationships with those in my family, church and community. I will pursue lifelong learning and making a difference in my world. I will continue to pursue writing even when laying my soul bare to the public still terrifies me. I will continue to pursue health and fitness and connection with my kids. I will continue to pursue my husband, making our next 22 years even better than the last. 🔥

2023 will be a year of pursuit. Less wasting time. Less fluff. Less indifference. More fire, more caring, more presence.

How do we face the "race that's marked out for us"

How do we face the "race that's marked out for us"? Sometimes we're dealt a really tough hand, or maybe we've made choices that create difficulty in our lives. They may have been the right choices for us or our family, but it distanced us from loved ones. ⁠
⁠
Maybe we've chosen to work on healing ourselves emotionally or building our bodies into stronger, healthier versions. This is HARD work. It's not fast or easy or a "one and done" scenario. ⁠
⁠
During the past 10 months, I've been working on my physical body. It has been crazy hard. I've wanted to give up a zillion times. But each time I'm pulled back... "let us run with perseverance..."⁠
⁠
I've come a long, long way from a year ago. I can lift more weight, do more cardio, work out for longer periods of time. But above all that, is the mental endurance I've built. When hard stuff comes up in my life--marriage, parenting, work, friendships--and I want to run and hide... I just remember how far I've come. How many times there was a workout I simply didn't think I could do, then killed it. ⁠
⁠
What is my secret weapon? There are three:⁠
⁠
Patience. Perseverance. Prayer.⁠
⁠
I've learned that nothing incredible happens fast. PATIENCE and PERSEVERANCE keep me disciplined even when I don't see the changes or results that I want to, whether physically or emotionally. And finally, PRAYER is the single most transformative source of power we could ever have access to. When I can't, God can. It's really that simple, but it's not always easy to admit I can't do it all; that I need His help. ⁠

Whatever you're facing today, I pray for patience. I pray you keep showing up even when it feels hopeless. I pray you lean on Jesus and let him take the parts that are heavy and overwhelming. 💗

This year/summer has been bonkers busy. I'm grateful for a little more structure in our lives. Kiddos are in grades 12, 7, and 5 this year, all in the same school again, a 10-minute walk from our house.⁠

My Ellie lives life fully, spreading glitter and giggles everywhere she goes. This photo was take at my book launch party a few months ago. She is so proud of me, and one of my biggest supporters. She delights in others' happiness and success. Every time I open her report card, I smile. Because every time, the teacher skims over the academics and goes right to, "Ellie has such a heart for the underdog and is the first to step in with a hug and encouraging words when someone is sad." ⁠

These two words seem to sum up this summer, and well, honestly just my 40s so far. My emotions have been all kinds of crazy lately, my body feels like it's trying to let me down in any way it can, and everything just feels like a lot. I've talked to my doctor and got lab work done. My numbers are all perfect. Yes, even my hormones. Everything is just beautiful. I'm grateful for health but I'd hoped for one number just really far off so I could have a course of correction and healing. I've been seeing my therapist again too, and she's helping to give me tools that keep the anxiety at bay.⁠
⁠
But in the middle of brokenness, there is also bravery. I've been trying new things. I signed up for a trial week of CrossFit and LOVED it, so I'm adding it as a supplement to my regular gym programming. I tried pickleball with my husband and enjoyed that as well, so we signed up for the summer. Last Sunday I helped lead worship at our (very large) church for the first time in 8 years. It was terrifying and I wasn't sure I could do it. Mistakes were made but I survived just fine, and the Holy Spirit beautifully took over.⁠

I've come to realize my human limitations. When I come to that point of overwhelm and anxiety, I have found that I need to lean on Jesus. If I'm conquering anxiety, it's all His power. He makes me brave. I'm a recent anxiety-sufferer; it's not something I've struggled with all my life, but it seems to have settled in to stay. I work out 4-5 days each week, and I try to walk at least an hour every day. I'm learning to make daily prayer and gratitude a top priority. I still struggle, but I know that "I can do EVERYTHING through Christ who gives me strength."(Phil 4:13 NLT)⁠

I'm still broken, because I live in a very human body in a very broken world. But I'm also braver than ever before, because I've found an infinite power source. If this is middle age, it's ok. If you see me crying, that's ok too. I was made to be soft and sensitive and sometimes this world is a bit much. As per my therapist's orders, I'm aggressively curating my newsfeeds and deleting social apps off my phone. But I still check messages and love to hear from you! ⁠
